Postdoctoral Engineer/Scientist Positions
UCLA’s Wirz Research Group has recently received multi-year funding from NASA, DoD, and DOE for multiple positions to perform ground-breaking research in the areas of space electric propulsion, plasma-material sciences, and fusion energy. We are seeking at least two senior researchers to help lead multi-year experimental and computational studies of plasma-material interactions for propulsion and fusion applications as well as comparative studies of thruster in-space and terrestrial behavior. Successful candidates would be involved in at least one of the following areas: (1) leading modeling and experimental efforts in collaboration with NASA, DoD, DOE, and UCLA Plasma Physics; (2) working closely with experimental researchers to design, build, and run laboratory tests with associated data processing; (3) helping lead teams of researchers at UCLA and 11 partner universities across the U.S. in data-driven and physics-based modeling and theory. The position will include collaboration with scientists and engineers at NASA, DoD, DOE, UCLA, several U.S. Universities, and throughout the local and national aerospace industry. Our capabilities include on-campus experimental facilities, High Performance Computers, cluster computing, multiple vacuum chambers, CNC machines, 3D printers, material analyses, as well as access to cutting edge facilities and models shared with our collaborators.
Required qualifications and capabilities:
Qualifications: Ph.D. degree, experience, and related publication record in space propulsion, plasmas, fusion, and/or related fields (e.g., aerospace engineering, physics, materials science, fluid mechanics, chemical engineering).
Preferred skills: Experience in plasma experiments and/or physics-based and data-driven models. At least, one position will employ skills including machine learning, artificial intelligence, verification & validation, and/or uncertainty quantification, or at least a desire to operate in this space.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proven track record of innovative project contributions and publications. Open to working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.
