HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the bacteriology laboratory of Dr. Ann Jerse within the Department of Microbiology (MIC) located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MIC.
This individual will primarily support the study of molecular mechanisms of Gonococcal Pathogenesis in female mouse models. This individual should be able to perform bacteriological cultures, antibiotic testing and polymerase chain reactions. The ability to work with animals is a plus. Basic animal handing will include immunizations, collections of biosamples, injection of compounds and experimental infection. Training can be provided but previous experience is an asset. Performs research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff. Solves less complex problems in carrying out research projects in a clinical or laboratory environment.
- Immunization of mice for mouse model experiments with little supervision.
- Will assist with animal handling and husbandry.
- Responsible for vaginal cultures of the mice during the challenge experiments.
- Contact between the collaborators, Drs Jerse, Daly and Liechti.
- Support with general and detailed laboratory support for both Drs Jerse and Liechti.
- Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques including basic bacteriological and molecular techniques; ability to follow general instructions; good communization and analytical skills. Previous animal handling is desired.
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree is required.
Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-2 years of relevant work experience required.
Work Environment: Set in a laboratory work environment.
Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
