The Salama Lab investigates bacterial and host factors that allow the human ulcer causing bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, to establish infections, cause disease, and predispose individuals to developing gastric cancer.
The technician is responsible for performing standard and investigative laboratory work in support of scientific research by performing bench-level experiments, operating analytical instruments, recovering, compiling, and verifying the accuracy of research data; performing calculations; preparing charts, graphs and summaries. Participation in lab meetings and presentation of data will be required.
The technician, working under the direction of the Principal Investigator or higher-level laboratory personnel and using limited discretion and judgment in carrying out experiments, will:
- Perform experiments at the bench level to support investigative work including immunohistochemistry, imaging and analysis of stained tissues, microbial culture, tissue cell culture, PCR, molecular biology, RNA and DNA extraction, DNA sequencing and data analysis, murine husbandry and maintenance of transgenic murine colony.
- Prepare and maintain laboratory reagents, stocks, cultures, tumor cell lines, and primary human and murine organoid cultures
- Perform and modify documented protocols and assays
- Maintain laboratory records and compile data on experiments and assays
- Interpret and report on experimental results
- Perform statistical analysis of test results and prepare written reports on work performed
- Operate and carry out basic maintenance of laboratory equipment
- Order and maintain appropriate levels of supplies
- May supervise work-study students
- Perform other duties as required
- BA/BS in a scientific field required
- Must have hands-on laboratory experience with tissue analysis (including RNA extraction and immunohistochemistry) and proficiency with epifluorescence and confocal microscopy
- Computer proficiency, including experience with spreadsheets and database software, is required. Experience with HALO software (Indica Labs) and MATLAB is highly desirable
- Independent research experience in addition to school lab experience is usually necessary
- Prior experience with murine handling and/or microbiology is highly desirable
- Well-organized with strong attention to detail, and motivated to participate in multiple levels of lab activity
- Ability to work independently and perform experiments with little supervision will be required after training
