Argentina, located in South America, is the second largest country in the region. It is famous for its European inspired cities, tourist sites and gastronomy. In 2001 Argentina experienced the worst economic collapse of its history, yet since then, the country has been on a path to economic growth and social inclusion. Over the last several years, there has been a concerted effort to provide universal insurance coverage to the entire population through a decentralized network of primary and secondary clinics and hospitals. A huge shift in public health policy in Argentina during the last 10 years has meant more funds have been designated towards the public healthcare system, resulting in the increase of access, services and quality.
CFHI’s Global Health Intensive in Argentina takes place in university town of Cordoba, the country’s second largest city. This survey program provides exposure to Hospital Medicine through clinical rotations at some of the oldest and most renowned teaching hospitals in Latin America, providing exposure to government programs serving uninsured patients. Take part in daily rounds alongside local healthcare personnel and join lectures and discussions on case studies with local medical students and residents. Rotations vary and may include opportunities to take part in focused physical exams and patient histories in infectious disease, HIV/AIDS, surgical care, oncology, dermatology, pediatrics or psychology wards.
Get a crash course in Argentinian culture and language by spending 2 weeks living with local college students or families and taking conversational and medical Spanish classes. Around Cordoba enjoy museums, theaters and cafes and local nightlife. CFHI participants may also organize day trips over the weekend to destinations such as Villa Carlos Paz lake region or surrounding hill towns for hiking and outdoor activities.
